Last week we looked at a DVD called "Endurance" and talked about a Fendalton Hero - Frank Worsley, who was on the Endurance when it went to Antarctica in 1914 and sunk in the ice. We also had a visit from an RNZAF Helicopter on Friday, read more of Darkwing, looked into Adverbs and continued looking at famous New Zealanders. We have done lots of training for the cross country, including a "Butterfly" session of speedwork/fartlek running and a two lap time trial.
Week Eight
This week we have Mrs Coats in the class on Monday as I am at QEII with the swimming team. We are looking forward to our trip to the museum on Tuesday. We have a Cross Country practice with the rest of the school on Thursday afternoon and a number of the class are involved in finals of Summer Sports on Friday. Lost In The Forest.

At 2:00pm on day two of camp in Hanmer, group D did Orienteering.
First, the leader, Heather gave us a map, a compass, a pencil and paper and if we needed it, a stop watch. Next we learnt how to read the map and how to use the compass. We had ninety minutes to find all the markers [controls] and the most points you could get was 600. Unfortunately,my team split up,so it was only me and Rachel. We met Rachel's dad on the way so he came with us right to the end.
When we got back,we found out that we had come 2nd with 520!!!!! WOW!!!!!!! I never thought we would get anywhere near 1st!!!!!!

Hot Pools!

On 2 nd March 2009 everyone in room 10 and 7 went to the hot pool.
Some people went in the car the others ran to the pool.
I went on Mrs Haford's  car.
I also went with Xiling and Xiaoling.
When we got to the pools i got changed.
The lifeguard talked to us about some rules.
We got in the pool.
IT WAS SO WARM!!
I also went to the rock pool.
The rock pool had a cool side and a warm side.
I also saw Miss Jamison.

Hot Pools

On the 2nd day of camp, late in the afternoon at 6:45 pm Rooms 10 and 7 gathered up to go to the hot pools. Everybody was so excited. Then we all  headed down to the pools. Some people ran down with Mr Norton but I didn't run because I was to cold. When we arrived we met up with a life guard who talked to us about safety and were all the pools were. Even though I had a Hydro-slide pass I didn't go it because I wasn't sure what it was like.We were only allowed in the pools that were on the left side of the entrance. I mostly went in the fresh water pool and the hot spas. At 8:45 pm everybody got of the pools and got changed. Then at 9:00 it was time to go back to camp.

Bivoac

On the last day at Hanmer Springs we made the bivouacs.
Logan, Maddison, Moss, and jooyoung, and I, made a bivouac.
First we got two logs, then we found four trees, so we decided to go there.
There was two trees in front and two behind.
We put the logs on the trees one behind and one in front.
We found lots of sticks with leaves on them, and lots and
lots of long sticks.
For our roofing we picked up lots of twigs and long sticks
and also sticks with leaves on them.
We versed other people in our class.
After we made the roofing Mr Norton got a bucket of water and pured it on us we got
a bit wet other people got soaking wet but we only got a bit wet.
It was really fun, i hope we go again...........

Tree Cimbing

On the second Group D, which is my group, did tree climbing.

The first thing we did was to put on a harness and a helmet. Our first activity was lots of fun. We had to build crates on top of each and the highest block tower won.

We divided into two teams. My team won by 1-0 because we got lots of draws. After the activity we started climbing trees.

Stella was the first person to climb up the smaller tree. The some people climbed a higher tree.
I found tree climbing hard but challenging.

bivouacs

On 4 March, room 7 was on camp and made Bivouacs.Bivouacs are huts made out of anything that you can find.I was in a group with Brad(parent),Logan,Madison,Jacob and Yong. The main thing that a Bivouac needs is support. If a Bivouac doesn't have support then it would collapse just like a human with no bones!

Hobo-stoves are used by 'hobos',People who live on the in the wild or on the streets. We made hobo-stoves on camp on cooked pancakes on them.Yum-yum.We could become wild men!Unfortunately we go to school and our parents would tell us off and Say's spent all the money on school fees just for you and now your going to live in the wild?!?!What a waste of good money!'.So if you make hobo-stoves on camp don't get any ideas!

You may think that parachutes are only for airborne activities but if you do you thought wrong and I'm Positive! On the last day of camp(my true love sent to me)room7 played with a parachute. The first activity we did was called cat and mouse and that was really fun and then we played popcorn.Popcorn is fun because the more balls you use the harder it gets!
At Hanmer  Camp we did Mountain Biking and it was fun.

First we put on a helmet that fitted. Then we all got bikes. Next we got started.

I fell off once. We did the mountain biking in the forest. It was steep, especially when we went over tree stumps and roots.

It was really fun I was sweaty

The Bivoac

The Building of the Bivouac

On the last day of camp, Wednesday, we set out to the forest.
We did a blind trail, but after we made shelters called 'Bivouacs'.
Mr. Norton gave us 30 minutes to build it.
I paired up with Jessica.

We chose a nice tree to build it on and we set to work.
Jessica found nice, big flax stalks to build it with.

She handed them to me and I put them in place. We made sure to make a hole to get in and stuck
some branches, like a roof.
Just in case,we threw in some flax stalks inside. We waited until Mr. Norton shouted "Okay, times up! Can everybody get in there bivouacs?!"
We squeezed through the hole and covered it with the branches.  We accidently left a hole in the roof and got really wet. We pulled the branches away for the photo.

ORIENTEERING!

On the 3rd of March group D & B went ORIENTEERING in the forest.

Fist Heather gave us Maps, compasses and stopwatches.
We were a bit scared that we would get lost but luckily we didn't.
On the walk we had to look for controls hanging from trees. We had 90 minutes to find all the controls. When we got to the end 5 seconds left so we had to sprint, but my shoe fell off so i had to put it back on. Luckily we made it. Heather showed us the score, and we got second to last, but some cookies cheered us up. The orienteering wasn't my favourite thing, but it was alright.

Hot Pools

On the 2nd day day of camp, late in the afternoon at 6:45 pm rooms 10 and 7 gathered up to go to the pools.Everbody was so excited. Then we all headed down to the pools. Some people ran down to the pools with Mr Norton but I didn't run because I was to cold

My Bivouac

When we got to the forest on the last day for the bivouacs, Mr. Norton told us where the boundaries were.
After that he told us GO!!!
We ran to find somewhere to build. We found a excellent place to
build. We started to make our bivouac.
When we finished, Mr. Norton came around with a bucket of water.
I saw it dripping on my head. He said it was only going to be a
dribble. He stuck his hand in the bucket, Then he flicked it
at us. I didn't get wet. YAY!!!!!!

Bivouacs

It was the last day of camp and finally we got our to make our Bivouacs in the forest.
Sam,Josh,Louis and I were in a group together and it was an outstanding group.

First we had to find a place.
we found a dirt mound and lots of big sticks but we also found a big black mat and it was perfect!.

With five minutes left we got more sticks than ever and we did really well, mainly because of our sheet.
If it was a competition we probably would of won!

Diamond Smuggling!

On Monday night at 7:00 till 9:00 we went Diamond Smuggling.
Everyone was involved.

We got a Diamond from Mr Norton.
Then we ran through the river. And I fell in!

It was frezzing cold!!!!
I ran past 3 pearents.

Group B won by 2 points.
Then we went back to camp.
I was even more colder!!!!!!

I really enjoyed it!!!!!!!!!

Waterfall Walk

On Monday 2nd of March 2009 group A, B and D went on a waterfall walk it was a really hot day. When we got there we started walking for 2 hours.

I got really tierd from walking because we had to walk up hill and I am not used to that. When we got to the top of the waterfall we had a break and looked at the beautiful waterfall. The waterfall had colours like blue and silver it kind of looked like a rainbow the waterfall was 41 meters tall and had a pool at the bottom.

Then we went back on the way back it was all down hill and I kept falling over. It was so so so fun. At the end we walked back to the cars and went back to camp.

The way to the waterfall was really long.
We first had to go up down up down.
I didn't like the waterfall walk because it was hot and long.We kept going up and it got higher and higher. It also got cloudy.
I was really sweating.
There was 6 bridges and 60 stairs in a total!
We reached the waterfall and it was huge!
Mr Norton took a photo of a group of girls and a group of boys.
On the way back Mrs Jamieson took the lead. There were a lot of steps.
I fell over a few times. I didn't feel good when I fell over.

Hurry Up Storm's Coming!

On the last day of camp 2009 we did some bivouac building.
My team was Cille, Stella, Amine, Michelle and I (we also got some help from some parents)

We got big dead branches and I stretched a flexible branch from a nearby tree onto our bivouac. Our bivouac was shaped like half a tee-pee!

I stayed in the bivouac for the competition. Lots of other teams'
bivouacs leaked, even the one with the tarp over it!

Then it was our turn. We got photos of our team, then it was time for the test! I got in with Rachel, then Mr.Norton poured water over our bivouac and we only got a few drops on us and nothing leaked!
We all headed back from the bivouac area with a yummy morning tea waiting for us.

WHAT A GREAT MORNING!!!!!!

It was Tuesday,6:45pm in the evening when
everybody gathered at the courtyard.
Mrs Harford talked to us about which car
we're going in.
After the talk we went in the cars(I got to go
in Mrs Harfords car!).
We got to the hot pools and I was still in line to get my Hydro slide pass.
When we got our pass the life guard talked to us about safety and which pools we were allowed in,at the same time some people got changed.
Some ran to the normal pools and some ran to the hydro slides.
After an hour it started to get cold so some                                                                     people got out and got changed.

The Waterfall Walk

On the 3rd of March Groups A, B and D went on a fun but long walk

How TalL Are Those Trees?

At 12:00pm  on day two of camp at Hanmer, group D and B did tree climbing.
First we learnt how to put our harness and helmet on. After we had
been checked, we were split into two groups and my group did the
crate  challenge. There was a builder and a climber. The climber stands
on the crates the builder builds and the builder stacks crates up in two
piles. When everyone had had a go at builder and climber we moved on to climbing trees.
On the first tree I got to the top first but Sam was much faster to get to the top. On the second tree I got to the part where there are no more blocks to put my hands and feet on.
Overall I thought it was my favorite rotation.

Mountain Biking

On the 3rd of March my group did mountain biking. My group was group D and a person named Ashely led us. I got a very small red and black bike. It was a long biking track in the forest. At a place that was called 'Big Dipper' Logan did a big jump. A place that I called 'Ramp' Logan and Sam did a high jump on the bike.

When we were back at camp we had a rest for the next rotation.

I really loved the mountain biking because I learnt how to use fantastic gears on the bike.
